Greenbacks

We get asked the same questions about Greenbacks every year. What’s a Greenback? Why should we give to Greenbacks? What about the other fundraisers we get asked to participate in throughout the year? What are Greenbacks used for? How much should we give?

What’s a Greenback?

Simply put, Greenbacks are our primary fundraiser of the year. If we raise enough in Greenbacks, we don’t have to keep coming back and asking for money!

Ok fine, but why should we give to Greenbacks?

Greenbacks are used to pay for the various programs and activities the PTA puts on throughout the year. Without Greenbacks, we would be continuously asking for money every time we held an event. Your PTA has three sources for nearly 95% of our funds: Spirit item sales, the Fall Festival, and Greenbacks. If we collect enough through those 3 sources, we don’t have to ask for any additional money through fundraisers for the rest of the year!

If most of the money comes through those 3 sources, why do I get asked to participate in other fundraisers (APEX, Y-Ties, Smencils, etc.)

All of those other fundraisers are done by the school to fund participation in specific things (for instance, extra supplies for the Art program or raising funds to send the Honor Choir on a special trip or buying special equipment for the Gym). The PTA, in addition to the school faculty, staff, and administration, supplies volunteers to help run these events but doesn’t actually receive any funds from these events. Even the box tops and soup labels programs raise funds that go directly to the school, not the PTA. The PTA is not a fundraising organization and we won’t ask for any money we don’t need!

Ok, so why does the PTA really need money? What are the Greenbacks actually used for?

In the past, Greenbacks (and other PTA dollars) have been used to find a variety of “in-school field trips”, author visits, Red Ribbon week, the Fifth Grade party, Boohoo breakfast, and Grandparents’ Day, as well as admission for off-site field trips, and, when necessary, charter buses for longer field trips. Check out this slideshow to see pictures from previous events.

You’ve convinced me, but how much should we give?

Obviously, every family needs to consider their own circumstances. Based on the budget that was approved at the last general PTA meeting in May 2014, we expect to spend an average of more than $30 per student from Greenback funds during the 2014-2015 school year. If you can give that much, great! If you can give more to assist with those families that can’t, even better! Whatever you can give is the right amount!

Meet The Teacher Night 2014

Welcome to all Las Lomas Families! If you’re returning, we’re glad to have you back, and if you’re new to our school, welcome to our family!

Las Lomas PTA is looking forward to the new school year and it looks like the parents and the kids are looking forward to it too! We hope you can join us on Thursday night for Meet the Teacher and Parent Orientation night. Las Lomas PTA volunteers will be at the school starting at 5:00 PM so you can purchase PTA memberships, make a greenback donation, purchase spirit items and give you an opportunity to volunteer. You can pay using cash, check, or credit cards. This is the only time we accept credit cards for payment!

Be sure to check out our website www.LasLomasPTA.com to find out about upcoming events. You can also sign up to be notified of upcoming volunteer opportunities.

We strongly encourage you to participate in the Las Lomas PTA. We’re here for the students and the school and there’s no better way to get involved than through your PTA. If you’d like to get involved, you can send an email to volunteer@laslomaspta.com. Also, be sure to check our website where you can see the open positions on our board that are just waiting for you!

Looking For School Supplies Yet?

Seriously?

Who’s thinking about school supplies yet?

We are! Let us handle the details for you! Even better than that, contribute to your PTA at the same time! A portion of the purchase price of each School Supply Pack comes right back to our PTA to use in our own school.

Supporting your PTA while simultaneously taking care of one of those “summer chores” that you don’t want to do anyway? How can you beat that?

Go to EPI Packs and let us take care of the details!

Get Involved!

Are you interested in getting involved but don’t know where to start? Check out the PTA Directory and see if there are any committees that interest you! Many of these committees are busy for only a few weeks to a couple of months each year.

Feel like you’re too busy? Busy people get things done, so don’t feel like that should rule you out!

Work full time? Several of our board members (including our incoming president) work full-time jobs, you can too!

If you’re not sure, contact us and we’ll see what can we can come up with!

New PTA Web Site

Welcome to the new Las Lomas PTA web site! We’re still playing with the format, so you may see some changes over the coming weeks. The single biggest thing that has changed (other than the look)? Check out the new Events calendar (click on Events in the menu bar above)! We’ll keep this up to date with events that are PTA-related, impact parents, we need volunteers for, or we just think you’d like to know about!

As always, if you have any comments or questions, let us know!

From The Desk Of Principal Rochkus

Principal Rochkus:

Dear Parents,

It is very hard to believe that we have already completed the first six weeks of school. It seems like yesterday we were planning our May family picnic. Before you know it, we will be moving into our new facilities and enjoying all of what our new school has to offer for the education of our children.

Each week I send out a brief newsletter to our parents through our e-mail system. If you are not receiving this newsletter, please contact our office at 407-1606 and speak to Mrs. Kiest. She will be happy to update your e-mail address in our mainframe system. As a LEED Green school, we work to reduce the paper we use, but if you do not have an e-mail account and wish to have a hard copy of the newsletter, you can contact your child’s teacher and have her/him print you a copy. The copy won’t be sent home until Monday, as the newsletter is published after school each Friday.

Beginning Friday, October 12, 2012, we will hold a “Spirit Day” competition each week. Teachers will send down the percent of their students who participate in “Spirit Day”. It is simple to participate. All your child needs to do is wear their Las Lomas shirt or dress predominately in Purple or Gold. The class on each grade level with the highest percent participation will have the bragging rights as the most spirited class and keep the Spirit Trophy in their classroom for the week. Any class that has a 100% participation rate will earn an extra five minutes of recess on that Friday. If there is a tie, the classrooms will share the trophy for the week.

Gooooo Lions! Mr. Rochkus

Welcome Las Lomas Families!

WELCOME LAS LOMAS FAMILIES!

My name is Kristie Doderer and I am proud and honored to be the First President of the Las Lomas Elementary PTA. I would also like to say THANKS to Mr. Rochkus, PTA Executive Board members, PTA Committee Chairmen, PTA members, and all Las Lomas families who have come together to make this a great year so far, despite the fact that we are on two campuses. The PTA has been busy at work since last May’s Charter Meeting getting programs set and ready so that the students will have an enjoyable year. However, we are still in need of volunteers to chair the following committees:

  • ADEPT
  • Arts in Education
  • Beautification/Campus Imp.
  • Front Window
  • Book Sale
  • Copy Room/Front Office
  • HEALS
  • Hospitality
  • Special Education
  • Spirit Items
  • Sponsorship

Also there are some areas where we can use assistants, such as:

  • ADEPT Assistant
  • Arts in Education Assistant
  • First Fridays Assistant
  • Spirit Items Assistant

Please note that if you volunteer you are never alone. Everyone on the Board is ready to help whenever someone needs a hand. Please take the time to think about giving some time to the PTA and if you are interested please contact me!

Website

The website committee maintains the site to make sure that it is functional and usable. If you know of content that you think should be on the site, or you know a way that we can make it better, please let us know!
